Mission Statement Youth/Family

Youth and Family

Group D.C.
At Christ Lutheran Church we approach our ministry to youth and families with the intention of equipping them to be disciples.  We utilize an intergenerational approach which encompasses youth, parents, and other caregivers, accompanying them on their faith journeys from birth through adolescence and into adulthood.

Youth Ministry

We offer programs of fellowship, faith formation and service to youth from Grade 4 through Senior High School through our Energizer ministry (Grades 4-6) Confirmation and Middle School ministry (Grades 7-8) and our Senior High ministry (Grades 9-12).

Energizers meet the first and third Tuesday of each month from 5:30-7:30 pm in the CLC Fellowship Hall. Families take turns providing the evening meal, then the energizers are led in devotions, activities and crafts.  Special events such as hikes and bowling are sometimes arranged.

Confirmation
Confirmation
ministry (Grades 7-8) meets at 9:00 a.m. same time as Sunday School-9:00 a.m.  The Middle School youth receive instruction on what it means to be a Christian, what it means to be a Lutheran, and what it means to be a disciple at Christ Lutheran Church.  Sessions are taken from the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures as well as Martin Luther’s Small Catechism, however there is also time to discuss how our faith informs and influences our lives in our context.  At the end of Confirmation, youth have the opportunity to join the congregation formally by affirming their baptism.  Our Middle School Youth Group is the fellowship and service component of the Confirmation ministry, and offers opportunities to learn, travel and recreate with our youth and sometimes the youth of the larger church.

Highschoolers
Senior High Youth Group
meets each Sunday evening from 5:00 – 7:00 pm, sometimes at church but often at the home of one of our youth or at another location.  The Sr. High youth enjoy food, fellowship and informal discussion as they continue to build relationships with one another and come to better understand what it means to be part of the family of God.  Activities include a once a month trip to work at the Athens County Food Pantry, movies, skating, hiking, and LEO (Let’s Eat Out).

The Middle and Sr. high Youth regularly combine for special activities and learning events.  In November of 2007 we traveled to Washington DC to tour the US Holocaust Memorial and discuss genocide.  In February of 2007 there are plans on the board to go skiing in West Virginia, and in March we are putting together a service project in the local area.

Everything we do as part of the CLC Youth ministry is with an awareness of the “empty chair policy”, that is, there is always room for one more!

Family Ministry

FOURTH SUNDAY FAMILY FESTIVAL is an event designed to promote fellowship among families and partnership between the congregation and families as we raise our children to be faithful and responsible individuals.  On the Fourth Sunday of each month, CLC serves a family style dinner in the Fellowship Hall from 5:45-6:15 pm.  At 6:30, the adults go upstairs for a program designed to help them remain informed as parents on important issues they face everyday.  Youth and children remain downstairs for age-appropriate learning and activity.  We wrap things up at 7:30.  There is no charge for attending Family Fest, and all you have to bring is yourselves, your family, and an appetite for good food and learning.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight.

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.

It will be a healing for your flesh and a refreshment for your body.

— Proverbs 3.5 -8
