Dear all,

Important community support information:

  • Undie Sundays and Summer Sweats - It's August so we are at it again: collecting donations of money and gift cards to distribute for children in Athens County schools who need clean underwear or sweat pants during the school day.   To donate, look for a category on the Tithe.ly app linked to the church’s website, or send a gift card or check made out to Christ Lutheran Church with “Undie Sundays” in the memo line.   We will also have a special basket out for donations at Sunday service.
  • New Plastic Film Drop Off Opportunity at CLC John Deno brought forward “The Plastic Film Recycling Challenge" coordinated by NexTrex.  Participants collect plastic film with the goal of repurposing 500 pounds in a 6 month period.   If the goal is met, the group is awarded a Trex bench.   Nex Trex makes composite lumber for decks, siding, etc. from repurposed plastic film.   The Athens Kiwanis is partnering with different groups in Athens to help them with the collection.   John has been collecting the film for the Kiwanis, so he will head up our collection.   He has registered CLC with the Recycling Challenge.   Look for the collection container by the white table outside during the Sunday Services and under the coat rack in the narthex.   More information will be coming at a later time.   Please see the image found under "Downloads" for the types of plastic film we can accept.
  • Join other readers (or people who just enjoy a good book!) and their families in appreciating the wonderful New York Times bestseller The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd.   August 10th (6-8 pm) is the date of our Kickoff event. Join us at the Richland Avenue Park.   We will be decorating a traveling mural and bees, which will be placed at all the Athens County Public Library locations.   Bring your friends and family.   Young children are welcome.   Snacks and water will be provided.
  • Opportunity to Support Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Carol Kuhre (a member of Christ Lutheran Church), and some harding working film makers by purchasing tickets to see  Legacy: Women of Southeast Ohio, a series of documentary films highlighting the accomplishments of four Southeastern Ohio women, of whom Carol Kuhre is one.  The premier will take place on Friday, Aug. 27th at 7 p.m. at Stuart's Opera House.  Tickets range in price from free to $50. Ticket sale proceeds will be donated to the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Preservation Society. Other viewing dates are available.  In addition to Carol, the film also features: Ada Woodson Adams, local historian, civil rights activist and former President and co-founder of the Multicultural Genealogical Center in Chesterhill,  Dr. Francine Childs, Professor Emerita of African American Studies at Ohio University, civil rights and social justice activist, and Dr. Dru Riley Evarts, Professor Emerita, Scripps Journalism School at Ohio University, and three time Ohio University Alumna.
